New Zealand Hot Water Heat Pump Cost Index
June 2026 Edition
Suburb-level indicative installed pricing across 1,209 suburbs, 15 regions, and 5 brands with a verified NZ retail presence. Because New Zealand has no rebates for hot water heat pumps, the figures below are full installed prices: nothing to deduct, nothing to claim.

Key Findings
No rebates means the installed price is the whole story
New Zealand has no STC-style certificate scheme and no national or regional rebate for hot water heat pumps. Comparing quotes is simpler than in Australia: what you see is what you pay. Bank green home loan top-ups (from about 1% p.a.) are the main financial lever.
The typical NZ upgrade is electric cylinder to hot water heat pump
Most NZ homes already heat water with an electric hot water cylinder. A hot water heat pump does the same job on roughly 60-75% less energy, which is where the economics come from.
Gas replacement is a North Island story, and the clock is ticking on supply
Reticulated natural gas reaches roughly 270,000 homes, nearly all in the North Island. With NZ gas reserves down 27% in a year to a 20-year low and production falling, households replacing gas hot water at end-of-life are increasingly choosing electric.
Main centres tend to price tighter than rural areas
More installer competition in the larger centres keeps quotes sharper, while rural installations can attract travel charges. Getting two or three quotes matters most outside the main centres.
Methodology
The PumpSwap Cost Index is compiled from published NZ installer bundle pricing and manufacturer pricing for the 5 brands with a verified New Zealand retail presence, mapped across 1,209 suburbs in 15 regions. Figures are indicative installed prices (GST inclusive) for a typical like-for-like replacement as at June 2026; complex installations and relocations typically run $9,000-$13,000. There are no rebate deductions because no rebates exist in New Zealand.
Treat every figure as a range, not a quote. For suburb-level pricing, use our suburb cost lookup.
